My Corys

Good to see you've still got your Corydoras collection going strong Harlequins :good:

You got any breeding at the minute?

James.

Thanks :)

James - yes i have the 3 albinos breeding atm, see here :good: some vids of recent fry :)

Most of the corys were hiding in the main video, but usually the pandas, blacks & tri's are roaming around

VERY cute! Have your cories ever gotten sick and if so, what do you usually use to medicate them? I hear they are sensitive to salt and other meds. Is salt safe as a bath? I hear that cories rarily get sick, but I've had nothing but trouble with my Sterbai.

Touch wood - they rarily get sick - i did lose 2 beginning of the year, but thats may have been possibly age has opposed to illness...
So hence i haven't used any meds. Salt is a no no with cories - they can't tolerate it...so basically dont use.

Whats been the problem with your sterbai's ? - corys are pretty hardy given the right conditions with good food, good water conditions/tank maintainance and ideal temperatures...

I think I bought them infected with something.... Either parasites and/or fungus. Lost three within a week of purchase (one wouldn't eat and just wasted away with little or not other signs, one I found floating at the top of my tank completely white, and another (I would have to say the weakest of the six--had one eye) I just found dead at the bottom of the tank). I medicated the tank for internal/external parasites because the remaining three were constantly flashing and the larger one had white/gray film or fuzzy growth on the back end near the tail. That seemed to help, but after I stopped treatement, they started to flash again and the LFS owner suggested Tetra meds that treat everything since he had no idea what was causing their behavior or deaths. While that seemed to help, it damaged my biological filtration and my tank underwent a mini-cycle. After several water changes and monitoring everything, everything seemed fine--the cories have been eating well and very active. However, this past Sunday, I noticed that one of the smaller cories had what looked like small, white stringy growths here and there on his body. Since I read somewhere that Ich meds can treat other parasites and deseases, I dosed with the Ich meds I had on hand. While that seemed to help get rid of the growths, two of my three cories have been very lethargic. I know they are sensitive to certain meds and salt. I'm just at a lose as to how to get rid of this once and for all. I've had nothing but problems with them.

I keep the temp at 78F. The paramaters are zero for both ammonia and nitrites. Nitrates are 10 and pH is 6.6 - 6.8. The water is soft, but I can't remember the actual numbers). Typically I do weekly 25-30% water changes, but while they were sick, it was more like almost 50% every two to three days. Stocking is in my signature. The only chems I add to the water is dechlorinator/conditioner and occasionally plant fertilizer.

The only fish I have never had any trouble with are the neons and, so far, my otos--keeping my fingers crossed there.

I would do a salt dip or bath with them, but I've there are mixed messages with salt and cories--some say it's ok for dips/baths and others say they can't tolorate salt at all.
