My Corys Are Scratching On The Substrate

Hi guys

My corys are (what seems to be)scratching on the sand occasionally, similar to when my loaches had whitespot. They have been doing it for a few weeks, but there are no signs of whitespot. I did a white spot treatment last week as a precaution, and they still seem to be doing it now and then.

I have not kept corys before, is this a behavioural thing? They are often rummaging around in the sand, so perhaps it is something they do.

Anyone had similar?

Cheers

There might be something irritating in the water. Just do a larger than normal water change next time its due, and add some API StressCoat, the aloe vera will soothe the cories's skin. It might be a safe bet to add some activated carbon into your filter, it could absorb anything toxic that can be irritating the cories.

What are your water stats?

My fish started doing that when I started using King British Safeguard dechlorinator after Tetra Aquasafe was getting a bit expensive. They've stopped now I've switched to API stresscoat.

If you've tried what Crossfire has suggested, you need to consider the possibility of flukes. In very unusual cases gill flukes will appear without any fluke worms on the body of the fish. 9 times out've 10 there will be body flukes before ones attached to the gills though.

I personally think it's probably something in the water, my peppered cories don't get along with King British dechlorinators but they're OK with API StressCoat +

Even if you are getting good water test results, the natural behaviour of the catfish rummaging in the sand could be exposing them to nasty "bits and bobs" that have been decaying out of sight in this tank. Do you have or have you ever had any Malaysian Trumpet Snails, that will turnover the sand?

Just looking at your sig photo, the tank does have sand and not gravel?

Corys don't really get whitespot. It's probably something else. Make sure you don't overdose on dechlorinator or change it to another brand.

Thank you everybody. I have bought stress coat + which I will be using tonight. The tank in my signature does have small gravel, the tank the corys are in however has sand. The behaviour seems ot have imnproved a bit. I did use a King British water treatment and a JBL fertiliser - maybe these were causing irritaions? FIngers crossed a water change and a bit of stress coat will do the job.
