Well now I have no doubt as to the gender of my biggest albino bronze Cory: it's a girl! and she's laid eggs everywhere, followed by her other albino friend. Is it true that two females can sometimes trigger an egg release? I have no clue if these eggs are viable, but I don't particularly intend to try raising fry anyway (I don't have any fry food, for starters).

Should I remove the eggs from the tank? I have 6 Cories and a Betta in there, and I'm a bit worried that the Betta will overfeed on eggs (poor guy, right now he's freaked out by the two Cories dashing around the tank laying eggs everywhere :D)

If I was curious to see if the eggs were fertilised (and see if I could rais fry), what kind of tank could I use to make them hatch?

I've had females lay eggs before without the male fertilising them. Not sure if they trigger each other though.

You don't have to run out and get another tank and set it up to raise fry. You could (if you don't mind looking at it for a while) just buy an ordinary breeding net from the LFS and pop some eggs into there. Make sure it has good water flow to it (direct the filter outlet at it) and wait to see if they hatch. If they're unfertilised, they'll fungus. If you do end up with fry, you only have to feed them from day 2 or 3 (after they've absorbed the yolk sac). You could just feed them Hikari baby bites (which out of all the commercial foods is the best and I've not had huge fry loss feeding this) or if you have some, microworms.

Good luck.

I have from what I have been told just 2 female bronze cory, and yesterday one released loads of eggs, so yes from the post I posted yesterday, females can release eggs without a male being present....now all I have to do is get a male cory.....lol

http://www.fishforums.net/content/Corydora...ronze-Corydora/ have posted the link for information...!

I still have doubts about the gender of my cories, cause their finnage is very similar, rounded and relatively short - that said, one is huge, the other is small (then again, the bigger one, I've had for 4 years, the other I bought last year and was *tiny*). Well, only way to know is to see if they hatch, right? ;) I'm curious, so I think I'll scrape the eggs off the glass and put them in some kind of trap.

I don't have a breeding trap anymore (wonder what I did with my old one...), in a pinch, can I use a plastic container floating on the surface, with small holes for water exchange? Or a small fish net attached under the hood?

Any tips on detaching the eggs from the glass?

And, ahaha, victory, I have found fry food in my cupboard! So I guess I am ready for the adventure, if the eggs are viable.

I can't give advice on the container way of hatching and raising fry as I've only ever used a breeding net. I suppose you could put them in the fish net and try attach it. Problem is, other fish may jump in and eat them.

As for getting eggs off the glass, a sharp blade or if they're hard enough, you could roll them off (when they're not so squishy any more).

Good luck.

Ah well, false alarm - the eggs weren't viable. After 48 hours, they didn't change colour, no black dot in them, so I chucked them before they polluted the tank too much. So my verdict is that it really was a pair of females who were encouraging each other to release eggs. Lots of fun to watch, though! :D

You could still have a pair. Sometimes, not always, but sometimes the first few spawns aren't viable. The eggs are fertilised properly or are too weak. So you may still have a chance. Got any pics of the two so we could see if we could sex them?

:D
