Hi,

i've recently bought 5 corys, 3 bronze and 2 albino corys. Within 24 hours of them coming back from the shop i found 10 eggs scatterd in small groups on plants and the glass. The eggs were most likely from the large female bronze or albino cory. I have placed the eggs in a breeding trap but after 2 days they are still bright white. How do I no if the eggs are fertilised and how long will it be until they hatch?

If they are bright white and go furry means they are unfertilized, would be careful with using breeder boxes the fry can get through the gaps (one i have anyway) if your serious about raising them your best off getting another tank, i have my fry in a 5gal and a 10gal atm, would be better to have a bigger tank but space and money etc  take a read through this forum theres a few topics with discussion about eggs and fry :good:

the same happened to me ... all my fish started eating the eggs  , i rescued about 5 but they seem to be un-fertilsed. I don't know why the female would lay un fertilsed eggs

I think how corys spawn is, the female takes the sperm into her mouth (T shape you will hear about), lays the eggs, and then spits the sperm on the eggs, from what ive read, and watching mine spawn, so either she layed and didnt fertilize or ones you where left with where just the ones she didnt fertilize

The T position is actually where the female will suck sperm out of the male, this position forms a T where the male tends to be the top of the T and the female the down part,if you get my drift  ,this is also a good way to sex them at the time if you are unsure.the female will them swallow the sperm and it passes rapidly through her digestive track and will pass through the eggs which the female will then 'hold' in her pelvic fins which form a pouch before depositing them around the tank.If she has layed lots of eggs its quite possible some may be infertile.
Has she has spawned once its more than likely she will do it again :good:

thats what i said about the T  didnt know they digested it though looked like mine was blowing it onto the eggs

Greetings. This is a highly disputed account of how Corys actually spawn as the paper from the Japanese scientists that supposedly documented this account of what takes place has NEVER been produced. Most Cory breeders do not share this view of how Corys actually spawn. I know that I certainly do not.

If anyone can produce the scientific paper documenting this claim, then I will change my opinion. Not until then, though. Cheers. - Frank

Not on the Internet, anyway. lol.
so how do corys get the sperm to the eggs?
The most common accepted theory is that the milt is simply fanned across the eggs. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that what you posted is not possible. I'm simply saying that the individuals proffering this theory have never produced their research for peer review or publication, that I have been able to find.

We have a saying on this side of the pond. It goes like this: "I'm from Missouri - show me." lol. Cheers. - Frank
