This week I've had a number of guppies go 'missing' and didn't know where they had gone. Until earlier my other half spotted the clown loach cornering one off and 'digging in'

Is this normal clown loach behaviour? I've not heard of it before!?

That's unusual. I've never encountered that and clowns are usually very peaceful and tolerant of much smaller fish. Are you feeding them enough?

To be honest lately I have been feeding them rather a lot!

Sinking pellets in the morning, flakes in the evening and occasionally bloodworms at night.

It is very strange, they've always ignored my oto's and rummy noses which are about teh same size :S

Hmmmm maybe I'll just get some tiger barbs to keep them in check

How big is the loaches in Question ? I have read some accounts were a mature Clown loach has eaten small fish I will try and find the links and post them here

I have clowns at 7 inches and they don't seem to touch small fish that are healthy, one of them did eat a neon that was flapping about on the bottom tho... and newly hatched bristle noses have been munched in the past so it seems a case of if its easy to catch. But i haven't seen them actively hunt swimming fish.

Emma :)

Hiya, I have 5 of them all at about 3 inches long.

And no these aren't dead or dying fish were talking about, theyre very much alive that are being eaten!

ie never heard of a clown loach eating another fish -well not while still alive anyway.. are you sure the guppies were alive when the got them? i cant even imagine a CL catching one to be honest
confused.gif
i think something else killed them and they just took advantage of the meal

they can be aggressie but only really amongst a group of there own kind,,and then after a fight they tend tp show scratches ( from there blade under the eye) rather than bite marks.. so no im saying ..couldnt have been

edit! just read it properly and you say that they wernt dead or dying..i still dont think the clowns did it

Well one thinks wrong because I was watching on the latest occasion. They were like a pack of wolves, cornering it off and then it ended up in two halves. They left the head half though

Well I found one of the articles on the matter of Clown Loaches eating live food I.E small fish the observation is in the section on Breeding and I am unaware how highly the author is regarded but here it is:

http://www.aquarticl...wn_Loaches.html

Pre comment waver:
The important thing with this is do not shoot the messenger I.E me :good:

yes it is one article and it may not have anything to do with this particular threads problem I am currently looking through my book marks as I have seen a separate article stating the same sort of behaviour.

Just because I have seen it in two separate articles I do not take it as gospel rather I prefer to remember it until I witness behaviour myself.

Just trying to help

Regards onebto.
