A fox that's been hanging around the neighbourhood for a few weeks must have come through in the night and took both my lovely chickens.

I am heartbroken, what a horrid way to die. Poor Pecky and Shaggy.

I took my little son out to feed them and there were feathers everywhere. I told him they were all right but they got out and I had to put them away and sent him inside. I don't know what to say to him. Two days before Christmas.

:(

Not two days before Christmas, he loved those chickens. I'm not telling him they're dead. I'll have to avoid the subject for a while, just say it's to cold to take him out when I go to feed them...

Dilemna! Whatever you do will be wrong. We had a cat died when my sister and I were young (but older than Dylan). My Mum pretended he was missing to my sister but she told me he was dead. My sister was more sensitive than me and would have been very upset. She knows now that she was lied to and understands why. We are in our 50's now! I suspect Dylan would notice if you got new chickens. Just explain that the fox was hungry and was getting food for it's babies. That sounds more acceptable. Good luck with it. BTW Sorry about your chickens.

Not a nice situation but I agree with the above...
Have a look on the web for some cute baby fox pics too - that might swing it.

then take him out shopping for 2 more :)
(can you go shopping for chickens??)

Oh no! poor birds...he's gonna wonder eventually. you can let him know it was their time to see god and live in heaven? could make it less saddening for him ?

Don't let him be afrade to cry. Don't try to make it seen like the chickens should have been less to him than they were. When my frog was dieing my mom told me he was just a frog, and it made me feel like she didn't understand what I was going through.
I hope all goes as well as it can. Have a merry Christmas.

Best wishes,

Guppy fan

Sorry to hear this.
Its a horrible thing to discover,I have been through it twice.
I think the best thing is sit him down and explain to him what has happened but maybe wait untill after christmas day.
If you feel you dont want to put him through that you could buy 2 new POL as if i remember right you had x battery hens? There is a lot of the hisex (Brown hens) for sale.
If you do go down the getting new ones route you are going to have to make sure they are locked in a secure shed before it starts to get dark and not let them out untill mid morning as the fox will be back :(

What will you do when he realize's you arent feeding them?

Krib, I'm going out tonight to fake 9 large deer landing on my lawn, you think I can't fake feeding a couple of chickens for a few days? Mommas have ways..... :)

Buslady, I'm still not convinced I am going to tell him they're dead, I just know he will take it really badly :(

Guppy Fan - Don't worry, he's allowed to express himself, he may be a man one day but right now he's a little boy, and little boys and big boys need to cry sometimes. Incidentally, I'm sorry about your frog, it's sad when something you loved dies, you should be allowed to cry.

Graham....I'm sorry you've been through this too. I was always on the side of the fox but I pretty much hate this one right now, nature or not, I wish it hadn't happened and I wish I could go back and change it and I can't and that's the hardest part. I can't do anything about it. We are going to get new chickens, as to whether we switch them out and don't tell him....well, depends on whether we can get some in time. They were put away but the door wasn't locked. It will be in future.

Morgan - It's true you have to do different things for different kids, I know my sisters tortoise went up the rubbish tip, but Tracey still thinks dad buried him in the garden. My father wasn't the compassionate sort, so mum pretended dad buried him so Tracey could put flowers on his grave. That was about 30 years ago and she still doesn't know the truth.

Smith - yeah you can shop for chickens at Bobkan.co.uk - internet chickens, but these were rescue chickens and I need some more rescue chickens that look just like them. I will have to put a call out locally.

I have to go pick all their feathers up today, there's a trail right down the garden and over the shed, I am sending Dan and Dylan out shopping and I will clear up and make it look like nothing happened. Bloomin fox. I'm so mad at him.

ok, everybody else together: "I do believe in fairies, I do, I do."

Could you not tell him something along the lines of them going to a retirement home on a nice farm? May soften the blow of losing them?
