This is my cat Snickers. She's 8 Months old and I constantly catch her nipping at the glass on my tank trying to catch my Chinese Algae Eater.

 my cat used to do that, until i got a dog, and now the cat is incredibly antisocial -_- -_-

Hi PermanentXHate :)

Cute cat!

My cat Pandora likes my tanks too, but has never bothered the fish. She will only drink her water from them.

My Cat used to drink the water from my fish habitat too. He wasn't at all interested in fish (exept canned tuna  ). You have a cute cat! I love how half his face is orange and the other half is brownish (minis the white part).

Thanks a ton.
Mine doesn't try to drink the water. Maybe because I keep my tank slightly brackish? She must not like the salty taste.

I know the antics of cats are often quite cute, but make sure your cat isn't terrorizing your fish or stressing them out by its simple presence near their tank  . IMHO An interest in fish is probably not the best behavior to encourage in cats as the cat may actually decide to start catching fish from your neighbors ponds etc.

I know you mean well, Tokis-Phoenix, but you know how cats are. They are going to do just whatever they want to do whether you encourage the behavior or not. I just try to keep most of the lids fairly tight fitting, but some still have spaces where I used to have HOB filters.

Well yes I understand. My fish seem fine with the cat being near. They almost seem to taunt her haha. Especially my angel fish which are on the bigger side. We have a chair that sits by the fish tank and it's basically been named my cats chair. It's the only thing in the room she gets to scratch on, but she sits on it and watches the fish which come up to the glass to greet her.

She doesn't ever try to catch the other fish. She just cocks her head to the side to look at them. The only one she ever tries to catch is the Chinese Algae Eater. (about three-four inches in size) I caught her ontop of the tank once, and she was scolded for it. That's definatly a no. Over all the fish seem to enjoy her company.

And she is never an outside cat so she won't go after neighbors ponds.

Don't trust your cats!

They are far too cheeky.
Mine is completely aware that he shouldn't be near the tank and it only takes one look from me as he is walking towards the tank to stop him in his tracks.
Unfortunately the other night while I was watching a movie, he must have climbed on top of the tank on top of the light, his weight smashing the coverglass and the light plunging into the water. Luckily I have an RCD ( Residual Current Device) which cut the power as soon as it happened otherwise I would of ended up with a few hundred dollars worth of dead fish.

Don't Trust them!
I'm thinking of how to make my tank cat proof. Perhaps a hood or maybe some thick 6mm glass.

That much is true. They like you to think that they are doing exactly what you want them to do but are soooo sneeky. There is no doubt in my mind that she tries her moves in the confines of dark as night time falls and I head for bed, but I've taken care of that and added some thicker glass to cover under the lighting.

Works Great! :good:

My cats obsessed with my fish also. I did some adjustments to my 29 gallon, removing some fish to give to my sis in-law and she was totally fixated on the bag of fish!!! Sometimes she'll sit next to the tank and "stalk" them. My old tropicals really didn't seem to mind. I'm setting up a 125 gallon cichlid tank, now and there isn't a ledge for her to sit on. I'm hoping she won't jump on the top(i've never seen her on the op of the other tank and i've had it and her for years).

aw. she's an adorable cat. what's her name?

my fish does the same thing.

i bough my 32gallon off of craigslist (best place for bargins!) and paid 70 dollars. it came with two angel fish and 1 chinese algae eater that i decided just to keep because as soon as i saw them i fell in love with them. all three are already big and grown and before i added them my cat didnt really show any interest in my fish. NOW she's after all the big ones. just sits and watches forever.
