:-( I was hoping this wouldn't happen, but it did. One of my bettas appears to have fin rot on one side of her body, and the other one is suffering from stress. Would salt treatment be beneficial for these bettas?? What other things can i do to help these poor fishies?:'(

My bettas are sick and i have to quarantine them into their own seperate spaces I have some jars that would be perfect 'tanks' for them, but they kinda smell like food lol, right now i'm soaking them to get rid of the smell, and i know soap is a big, big, big no-no. I was just wondering what else i could do to prep these jars? I plan on keeping the bettas in the the jar/tanks , i might move the larger betta back into the community tank, but the smaller betta definitely needs her own private space.

i know these tiny jars should have gravel and a plant or two for hiding spaces for the betta, but would it be okay to put a home made tiny filter in each jar?

PS: I'm going to be taking my secondary 10 gal tank back cuz someone has given me a larger tank (word of my aquarium obsession is spreading quickly) :D The LFS that i purchased the tank from doesn't do refunds, only exchanges. I was hoping to get some meds and other stuff in exchange, but i'm not exactly sure what to get. -_-

Hi rcole82 :)

Keep that tank, if you can. it can serve as a hospital tank.

Finrot is a bacterial infection caused by Columnaris and/or Aeromonas bacteria. This bacteria is always present but only infects fish when they have suffered from stress such as overcrowding, infrequent or inadequate water changes, uneaten food in the tank, sudden rise in temperature, low oxygen content, or elevated nitrite levels.

The first thing to do is to make sure that your fish has plenty of fresh clean water. Small containers increase the chances of these infections because it is much more difficult to maintain good water quality.

For treatment, I recommend using the antibiotic Kanamycin. It is sold as Kanacyn by Aquatronics or KanaPlex by Seachem. It will treat both bacteria. If this is not available, you could also use BOTH Maracyn and Maracyn2 at the same time.

Good luck. Please remember that bacterial infection is a common ailment among bettas and it is much better to prevent it than to have to cure it. Clean and spacious accommodations are the way to go.

Inchworm, thanx for the info. the other 10 gal tank is going back but i still have a 5 gal tank on standby which isn't up and running yet cuz i don't have a pump, I'm also going to be recieving what lookes like a 20gal tank in the near future. :D The white dots on my larger betta's fins have seemed to decrease but they are still quite noticeable. She appears to be doing alot better than yesterday, swimming alot more and she still has a great appetite. I just installed a new fluorescent hood onto the 10 gal and both bettas appear to be in better spirits. I think my smaller female betta might be suffering from stress, she's quite timid and the other day i couldn't find her anywhere in the tank, i thought she had been eaten, but upon further inspection i saw that she had wedge herself under some large deco-marbles that i put in the tank and she seemed quite happy there, when i realeased her, she went and hid behind some leaves on one of my plants.

I'm scheduled to do a water change today so i will keep an eye on them and see if anything improves :D
