I just got my first betta this past weekend and for the first day and a half all he would do is hide behind his rock and wouldn't eat or go to the surface. I brought him to the surface with a net and fed him like that twice and since he has done fine, swimming about and exploring. Well now I'm having trouble with him being a little too curious. He seems obsessed with my filter (Elite Stingray 5) and swims around it most of the time. I've read that bettas don't like strong currents and I had the outflow towards the side of the tank, but he keeps getting either pushed away or pulled towards the filter. I've tried moving the outflow to a few different positions but the worst so far as been towards the adjacent corner. I then proceed to read for a bit and when I look over he is trapped in the corner with the look of "Save Me!!!". I have since turned the outflow so that it is facing the side it is attached to. Lets hope that he doesn't manage to get himself into too much trouble. :/

What I did was cut the ends off a water bottle and then slice it up the side to make an open tube. I placed one side at the top of the filter where the water comes out and the other side underneath the filter. I taped it into position and it basically gets rid of the current while still having it be filtered. :p

Well I'm pretty sure that my outflow problem is solved, but I may have to do something with the inflow. I've since named him Floyd and at the moment he is very pissed off at the filter and has been flaring at it for awhile now. Luckily for me he also flares directing at my web cam which makes for a good show. :)
