I've had a beta now for almost a year (his name is Sebastian). He is beautiful but I think he is lonely. I've been told I can put him with community fish but I don't really want to take that chance. He is in a 2 gallon tank right now. Would there be any problem with getting him a female? I don't want to breed but if it happens, it happens.

Any suggestions?

If you will mix them then it's going to be a disaster....

Could you possibly just get another betta and keep it in a separate tank right next to Sebastian's? It might stress him out too much but it should solve his loneliness. My 3 bettas seem entertained by each other. ;)

You definitely don't want to put another female in there. If you want to put him in a community tank, it will definitely have to be bigger than 2 gallons.

In my experience, the best way to kill the only-betta-blues is to get another betta and put his tank next to Sebastian's. All my bettas have neighbors and they all are so happy (constant bubblenesting). Or, you could split the 2 gallon you have now and get him another betta as a tank mate (separated by the divider of course!)

All I know is that my bettas, when separated from their tank mate or neighbor get very depressed, even to the point of not eating! Everyone needs friends...bettas just don't want their friends to be in their space, but next door is just fine!

well I have a 10 gallon but it is just getting over having ich in it. So I don't want to add any fish to that tank for awhile. I was just wondering if adding a female with Sebastian would be a bad idea. Obviously it would be... but I don't have anymore room for another tank and don't want to divide his tank now. He likes all the space he can get.

Put a mirror up to his tank every now and then. He will think it is another betta.

Change decorations around... something new to look at and explore. Other thing is feed live foods like daphnia and adult brine shrimp.... something he can chase.

I didn't think about that... thanks! :)
