Ok, I just got some live rock that was supposed to be cured from liveaquaria.com.... It was not. My whole apartment smells like a marsh at low tide. Its already in the tank. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting rid of the stink. My apartment is small and its pretty unbearable. Possibly a water change? (only a day after putting the rock into the tank).

Thanks
Tim

i have no idea how to get rid of the smell but thats kind of funny your house smells like seaweed :)

Haha it WAS funny until i got stuck in it for the nite. Its horrible!! How long will it last if left as is?

I am very new to the hobby. My friend had the same problem and his wife almost threw him and the tank out of the house. Lucky for him, the smell cleared up as the tank cycled. How long will it take, I am not sure, but I do know that it will go away and I don't think that you can do anything to speed it up.

Godd luck.

I had 35 pounds of uncurred rock, they were in the tank for 2-3 days, what I did was, I took
them out and cleaned under the tap water with the toothbrush (ofcorse no toothpaste), removing all the dead
pieces, after that I did water change 50%. Also skimming might help. Its not only removed the smell, its also speed up the whole process for me, after that I had no ammonia. Not sure maybe its puer luck but thats what happend.

If you have it, run some carbon in the tank, it'll help clear up the odors.

Sure can. Don't be afraid to do BIG waterchanges... Like 50-100%. Just make sure the new water is well mixed and appropriate temp.

increase aeration and do massive (100%) water changes as suggested above.
The smell will go when the rotting stuff is gone and broken down. It might take a couple of weeks but quite often clears up within a few days, particularly if you can increase water movement around the rock and aerate the heck out of the tank.
Protein skimmers will help as well but watch them because the collection cup will fill up pretty quickly if there is lots of stuff dieing off.
Drop the water temperature to about 20C. This will increase the oxygen carrying capacity of the water and that will help too.

i know what to do just get rid of the rock and get ones that dont smell

The smell is FINALLY fading away. Its still definately there but much, much better. Water changes and charcoal did the trick. Thanks guys... cant wait to get started on this one. It seems so far away still!
