Hi

I would like some help, first of all one of my angel fish died, no marks or anything so tested the water with a new kit that just come, the results are

PH..8.0
AMONIA..0.25
NITRITE..0.25

Here is the prob i test for nitrate the water is a dark rusty orange,,but guess what in my kit this chart card is missing :( i bought it from ebay so cant get another one,,could some one try to help me guess what the colour means, and where i can just get the card for nitrate pleaseeeeeee

Thanks

Lozzy

Sorry to hear about your loss, Lozzy. Maybe you could post the brand name of the nitrate kit that you have. Or, have you considered doing a search on the web? Sometimes companies will post pdf files of the manuals for their product.

I realize this wasn't part of your question, but I'd be more concerned about having measurable levels of ammonia and nitrites.

I have got all the bottles for every test etc and all the cards apart from one card which is the nitrate one..the kit i have is freshwater master test kit, aquarium pharmaceuticals inc..if that helps,,i really do need the colour chart so that i can see what the nitrate level is..i have no idea how to get one of these cards, i cannot aford to buy another kit:( so if anyone can help me with this i would appreciate it, i am very sad about my angel fish she was my fav:(

Oh well i just hope it was not because of anything i did or did'nt do

Thanks

Lozzy xx

Lozzy, I have the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Freshwater Master Test Kit, and it does not contain a nitrate test. Perhaps you have a different version of the master test kit?

At any rate, go here to the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals website. This is a form you can fill out for them to email or mail you a missing color chart or instructions. Hope that's helpful.

Angelfish are fragile and you having ammonia and nitrite readings in your tank probably killed it. Im guessing your probably have a new tank that is running which is the cause of it.

Lozzy, if your nitrate kit is anything like mine, then dark rusty colour is high nitrates. The lighter the colour, the less nitrate, in fact I believe that that is the case with most testers. Do you do regular water changes as this is the only thing that will lower your nitrate. I think that your tank is quite new and still cycling, and to be honest, angel fish are not the ideal fish to cycle with - they are very delicate and need specific water conditions to thrive. I suggest that you stablize your water parameters before adding any new fish. That is, get the ammonia and nitrite levels down to 0 and nitrate to a pale yellow colour.
