Personally, I'm a huge fan of schools. My boyfriend and I recently (a few months ago) started a 10 gal. We really wanted something flashy like a redtailed shark but realized the tank was too small. We settled with a handful of black neon tetras to start the cycle and fell in love with them. We then bought a fistfull more to complete thier school and have since been entertained by their playful antics. I'm sure you're looking for more than one species to fill your tank but that's okay....black neons get along with most anything...not that I'm pushing the neons er anything ;) .

What you choose is really dependant on what kind of community you're looking to create. I'm planning a 20 gal. and like you, have almost no clue what I want in it. What kind of fish are you interested in?

I was thinking of putting schooling fish in the tank since the tank is small. Thats what i was thinking of. My 30 gal has lots of charicins in it of diffrent species. But over the years i am gonna be changing that tank to like a big schooling tank full of colorful fish. I have a upcomming 55 gallon im gonna buy in 3 months. and i have no clue what im gonna put in it. Im still thinking what im gonna do with that tank or the 55. I also have a 5 gallon tank that has nothing in it and i don't know waht i am gonna put in that either, i know it's my choice what im gonna put in it. but i need some ideas soo i came make it better tank than how i used to set my old tanks. So thats why im asking.

Cardinal or Neon Tetras make stunning species tanks. You could probably but in twenty to thirty if you have a good filter. They are really fun to watch :)

After many years I returned to setting up aquariums. I never had neon tetras before so gave that a shot. Hmmm, let see I have had 4 or 5 die. Two remain. I bought some from a local fish store and the others from Petsmart which seemed cleaner. I get the impression from talking to the people at the store they aint the easiest fish to have. IMHO.
