a few weeks ago I was at the LFS and the owner asked me if I wanted a big CAE that someone brought in. I've had CAE before and really liked them so I say ok. Well she pulls a 6" monster out of the koi pond and gives it to me, I couldn't belive it was so big. Has anyone seen a CAE reach sizes like that? I ended up having to rehome him cause he was too big for my 29 Gal tank.

The temperate house at Kew gGardens has a heated pond. It houses a big RTC, a 4' tiger shovelnose, millions of guppies & hundreds of Gold CAE - spme of which are about ten inches long!

yes i've heard they get up to nearly a foot long in some cases!
They are a very aggresive fish and should not be placed in community tanks.

Not mutant at all. Considering they get up to around 10".
I had one that grew enormous and think it was up to around 8" - it went into our tropical pond after it outgrew the tank I had it in. Once in the pond it had a massive growth spurt even - just goes to show what adequate space can do.

I had no idea they got that big, I had one got to 3" and I though he was large, silly me :*)
I though about keeping him for my koi pond but the winters are too harsh here.
