Moving Over To External?

would it be better to run both internal and external together until the external catches up or to just chuck my old media in the new canister

I swapped my internal for an eheim 2213 in November and just put the media from old into the new and had no problems or you could run them alongside one another for a while. I just wanted to get rid of the internal asap.
