Bob, I haven't actually moved as yet but I will be moving in a couple of months. I will be putting my fish in rubbermaid containers with water from the tank and will have a battery operated air pump going during the 1.5 hour drive. I will be removing all the water in the tank except will leave enough to keep the substrate covered so as to not kill off the good bacteria. Will also ensure that I keep the sponge in my filter wet for the same reason.
I always bag the fish, just like the fish store does and put those in styrofoam containers. This way the fish will have plenty of oxygen, there are no big buckets of water to haul around or spill, and the fish are ready to be acclimated to the new aquarium. If you bring the fish to the fish store and have them fill the bags from their oxygen tanks the fish can last 36 hours in those bags.
With all the hassle of moving house on top, I think I would set up my tank at a friends and then move it from the friends house when we are setteled in.
Bob
my dad will be moving his 29 gallon when his house sells but we were just going to put them into a plastic container for the 20 minutes drive to the town he would move to.
