This is a 'what if' question, and heres the scenario.....
I have never kept any fish before but have always been interested in starting a reef system. Having just obtained a 36x24x18 tank I am now sufficiently motivated to start. I can find lots of information regarding equipment, lights, etc, etc, etc - all of it being ingested (I hope). My question is this:-

Assume I start the aquarium, and it all goes swimmingly (always the optimist) for 6 to 12 months. If I then decide to move house how easy or difficult will it be to relocate my tank and the stock in the tank????? What is involved?

If it is a REALLY big job would it be better for me to wait until I have moved? This could be 6 months, it could be 2 years, but it is highly unlikely that it will be longer.

Thanks for any advice.

It could depend on how far away you're moving. if you're moving 5 or 10 miles down the road i wouldn't expect it to be too hard/bad. If you are moving to the other side of the country it might be easier to give away/sell all your fish/LR/LS before you have to leave. From what I understand you can put your LR in a big container of the aquarium water and it should stay fine for a minute, but after a while it will start dying.

I will might be moving in the next 6 months or so and I am not anxious at all to move mine :S Also, I live in AZ so in 6 months it'll be over 100degrees outside and I would expect the rock to die if the container starts getting too warm in the back of a truck

I've never had to move, but i have changed tanks quite a few times. It's quite a bit of work but nothing a caring parent wouldn't do....right :D

Just have plastic bags and buckets stocked up!

yeah, I think the main problem lies in the distance of the move.
I have moved my 55 gal. twice in the last 3 years and did not lose
anything either time, but it was a short distance(25 miles).

the biggest key is planning everything out beforehand.

Three years ago, I moved my 75 gallon reef 300 miles. Two years ago, moved it 76 miles, 8 months ago I moved it 2 blocks, and 3 months ago I moved it 10 miles. Well, guess what, last month it moved 300 miles and is now with in a few blocks of where I fist set it up. It is stressful, takes all day, but can be done.

:D Thanx all. I guess I am now in for the scary bit .......comitting all that time and hard earned ££ to getting it all started :-(

I am sure I will be back soon with some more constructive Q's. Til then..nice tank ram!!!

 Were you out shopping with my missus?, she always ends up in the original place after trapsing all over the show :p

Sounds like the first crackpot I was married to...

I have moved tanks over 500 miles twice. I think I lost one fish. You can be successful with proper planning. The bigger the tank, the more work involved though. The size you mention shouldn't be a problem. Just about everything would fit into a couple tubs.
