Hey, I am currently in the process of buying some t8 fixtures, i am buying them as shop lights however from a hardware store as they are much cheaper. My issue is that I don't have any idea as to how i am going to mount it above my tank. I don't really wanna hang anything from the ceiling so I was thinking about something along the lines of legs that will attach itself to the tank.

Any ideas would be great! thanks

should just rest on the top of the tank. be sure to use a type of covering. perferably clear. hah

a nice piece of glass or glass tops

how long is ur tank and how long is the fixture or foxtures that u are buying?

and you need some way of stopping condensation forming on them or they may well go BOOM!!!

you could mount some L shaped brackets on the wall behind the tank to carry the weight of the units.

or simply make a wooden "box" that will slip over the top of your tank then hinge a lid onto it and mount the fixtures onto the lid....

4 foot fixtures.

and they can't rest on the top because I don't want my bulbs sitting on the glass.. I don't think thats too safe really.

I was thinking of something along the lines of an L shaped bracket but not sure how it would work yet.

as for the wood box idea i don't want to go that route because i want easy access to the tank and an open top or just the glass I am using now.

Ok here is what I am thinking... i put this together in paint.. its clearly out of proportion but you get the point. the green line is the tank... blue lines indicate a nut and screw.

do you think this will hold the weight? etc

acually.

that doesnt look to bad.
:good:

what are the L brackets going to be made out of?

zinc coated metal.

they seemed pretty sturdy when i touched them. like i couldn't bend them with my hands so i figure they will hold the weight.. hopefully

I use just plain 2x4's cut just long enough not to fall in the tank on each end then set the shop light on top of them...works great and they are not fixed so they can be easily moved if need be.
