at what size are they sexually mature?could i try to breed them in a 84x30x24 or 96x30x24?i have a 10-11" female allready so what sized male should i be looking for?i know the chances of breeding them are small but i would love to try and i want to get a companion for her anyway

Actually the chances of motoros breeding is quite high, they are probably the easiest ray species to breed in captivity.

Females should be sexually mature when they reach about 12 to 15 inches in diameter, males probably a bit smaller but you can see when males are ready to breed by looking at their claspers, when they become fleshy and rolled the fish is ready for mating.

Always try to get a male that is a bit smaller than the female, mating can get a bit rough and a smaller female could get badly injured or killed by a larger male, a seperate tank or a divider is usefull to give the female a bit of space if the male gets a bit to full on and she isnt ready.

You probably have a greater chance of success in a ray only tank but motoros have been bred in mixed predator communities before.

cool it looks like im on the look out for a 8-9" male motoro then :) if you see any around let me know.my lfs has one but they want £150 for a 5" disc :/and my other lfs has one for £100 but its got a load of torn netting stuck on its stinger.

I wouldnt worry about netting on the stinger, the stingers fall out and are replaced every 6 months or so anyway so it wont be on there for long, a hundred quid is a good price for a male motoro.

the guy at the shop said the same thing but i thought id check.he has bred motoros on the premises many times and seems to know his stuff.i might pop down there tomorrow.my female is about to shed her stinger i can see the new one pushing out :D

Good luck cane, would be awesome to have mini Motoros swimming arround your tank...

Post pics when you get him :D :good:

motoro are fairly easy to breed the only problem with them over other rays at breeding time is if the female is not ready and the male is a male motoro will kill a female most other rays will just do damage

you will have no trouble with tank mates in a tank with a breeding pair of motoro

the best way to breed motoro in the past has been 1 x male with 2 x females then the male wont keep on stressing out the one female to breed

i have all kept to the 1 x male 2 x female rule but after going to holland the other week the dutch ray gods say they have been having more luck with 2 x males and 2 x females
the tank my p14s come from has 1 x male and 2 x females and the male has only ever bred with the 1 female and has shown no intrest in the other female

maybe i will get another female today and grow her out for a while.then add the male when the new tanks up and running
