My mum wants some mosquito fish to eat the larvae in the pond outside. They need to be small as the pond's not huge and I'm in the UK so they have to be coldwater and quite hardy. I've heard of several different kinds but not sure if they need heated water. Thanks x

Most mosquito fish are small... guppy-sized. Are there any mosquito-larvae eating fish native to the UK? And, if so, are they sold in pet shops? (You probably don't want to fish one out of a local pond, might carry "bugs").

Go with native fish if you can, Mosquito fish will handle your winter, but they are not good if they manage to get out into local waterways.

We dont have native fish that will do well in ponds but you can get rosy red minnows as they are a bit bigger and hardier than moquito fish and will survive an english winter. They shouldnt get eaten either by the bigger fish but i would have thought goldfish would have eaten them as well, if you have any goldfish.
You can get mosquito fish but they might get eaten and not survive a winter, but any kind should be ok.
