Morays...

Gymnothorax maletremus stays under 10''. Because of their size they are compatible with most reef life.

They are nearly impossible to obtain and I've seen quotes of $350-1500. If you are willing to put an eel of almost 12inches in a nano tank.......well........

Hrmm, golden dwarf morays, there are 2 at my lfs that go for 185 a piece and they are about 4 inches long. Cool little things :good:

Edit: would you happen to know the lifespan of these? I am thinking about picking the pair up like in about 6 months if they are still there.

Snowflakes are of the genus Echidna (or sometimes Gymnothorax... I hate common names) and are thus morays.

I'm not totally sure but ten or fifteen years is probably a decent estimate. Maybe even longer.

Two 10-12 inch morays in a nano, IMO, is asking for trouble. Besides, I've read that they hide a lot. you probably won't see them much, or, you'll probably spend most of your time squinting and saying to others, "See it...right there..there it is.....under that rock in there...that yellowish thing."

Why not get something you can see during the day and admire? SH

I whole-heartedly disagree. These fish, while being predators, are not very active (depending on the species). They don't produce much more bioload than anything else does.

Keeping a small (repeat: small) moray in a nano is no less possible then keeping a clownfish in a nano. It all depends on maintainence. And the opinion that one is wasting money buying these fish 'cause they don't come out much... is just that, an opinion. I personally find a moray's ferocious looking, tooth-laden mouth peeking out of a crevice far more interesting than watching a cardinal, for instance, sit around and hop occasionally, even though I can fully see the cardinal.

Out of interest perhaps ':mad::mad:' could PM me the gist of his post...

Because different people want different things from their tanks. My frogs tend to sit around doing nothing most of the time and spend quite a lot of that hidden. Equally, my white ribbon eel is often just a head out, or completely hidden, but come feeding time, or that time when the fish comes out in all its splendour, it is all worthwhile.

I consider having interesting looking predators far more pleasing than having the bog standard fish everyone else has.

Ive noticed that in the display nano in the lfs. They just hid in the sump, but i was thinking they were doing that because they were still very small. When it came out though, it was pretty cool watching it eat an emerald crab like 3 times the size of its head. As long as their heads are popping out, im fine with that. I guess its the same with dragon eels, you dont really see them much because they just pop their head out most of the time. I will only get the pair if the lfs gives me a good deal, cause i cant afford 270 yet. We will see in a few months though, i cant move another fish tank down into my apartments yet.

Oh yeah, sorry for hijacking the thread

It's also pretty rewarding when you have a fish you really appreciate who stays hidden most of the time...whenever you actually do catch a bit of action like during feeding, it's about 10 times as pleasing.
