It's very good for some pleco's to have it as it forms part of their diet, I think Panaques in particular
Not 100% sure but from what I can gather it adds tannins to the water which is considered a type of medicine for the water and fish, i.e. can counteract disease and bad bacteria
If you use a lot of driftwood in the tank it can lower your pH [dependent on buffering capacity apparently] and soften the water, which is good for fish that like a more alkaline and soft water environment

Look at it another way 1 bit is £10 so 3 bits is £25 = a fiver off now ya can get a beer too lol

you are right about how they release tannins which can lower ph and soften water.
