It's 1:45am and one of fish has died so I'm still up on the laptop trying to comfort myself - and of course reading the forums.

I have a cold cathode tube that isn't a night light, when lights go out, it's dark, it's used to light the tank up during the day I have both lights on a timer, cathode comes on first, it's a gentle light before the main light comes on, then when the main light is on it turns off. The cathode comes on again later on and the main light turns off again - reason for this is to help the plants - and does help :) The reason for the cathode is to not stress the fish out too much. It means you don't got from dark to miday in one go. It's a soft yellow light, that sits in the front part of my hood. Does also give chance for co2 to build up for the plants and helps out with algae control too :)

However, back to the moon light, it would be nice to have a little something, but rather than use another cathode tube and a mains adapter and another timer I've had an idea.

First off, think of those solar panel lights you get in the garden, now think that for 6 -12 hours depending on your set up, you have light, so this is my idea.

One solar panel, one rechargable cell / battery, one photosensitive diode to turn it on when lights go off, and to turn it off again when lights come back on :) One mini low powered bulb / LED.

No cost of electricity, you could even shove it all in a ping pong ball and glue it up?!!?! Then you have one moon - have I lost the plot here or can this work? It won't stress the fish, it'll given them a comfort level of light, it won't keep them awake as it's just a very low light, it will look great, and it won't use up any mains power.

Anyway, going to head to sleep now, need to work out what I'm going to do with my dead fish :rip:

Night!

Tim
