Well hopefully its not that far off until i get my new big tank and my 30gal hex tank is emptied(had some issues with ordering my big tank, so things have been slowed up a bit), and also its not long until one of my friends goes to uni and i am left with his red tailed black shark.
I went over to his place the other day and watched his rtbs for a bit to get a better picture of its temperment, it does appear to be a bit aggressive towards some red tailed guppys he has in the tank with it but most of its aggression seem to come from the fact it has to share my friends common plec's cave and they are often chasing each other around when they confront each other over the cave.
Im happy to have it as the single resident in my 30gal hex tank apart from a half grown molly and platy if that needs be, but i have to admit i have grown attached to the pearl danio fry i have been raising which are about neon tetra size now and i would like to keep 4 or 5 of them in the tank with it if they are not likely to pick on the rtbs or vice versa;
Does keeping the moody rtbs with a molly, platy and 5 pearl danios seem like a safe risk as long as the rtbs gets its own cave? I would like to hear from those of you who have kept these fish together and wether they have a tendancy to be aggressive towards each other or not?
Thanks for your time :) .

Hex tanks probably aren't the best thing for RTB's IMO. They do better in tanks with a large foot-print and when kept in smaller tanks i found they can be much more aggressive. Saying that RTB's are all about personality...he might turn out to be the most docile fish in the world..or a holy terror.

The only way you'll really know is to give it a shot....but don't be surprised if it doesn't work out.

Cheers for the advice, i have to admit i do have a 3ft long 30gal tank somwhere but its not the best tank in the world in the sense that i have never got around to getting it any proper lighting or hood for the tank and its riddled with chips in the glass at the top- i think i will risk putting the rtbs in the hex tank, i would prefer to keep it in the hex tank as its a complete tank setup in good condition but i suppose i always have the 3ft tank at hand if things go wrong. Or i could buy a new 30gal tank altogether, and keep the danios in the hex tank, but either way i want to keep things simple if you know what i mean :) .

How many hiding places do you have in the tank that the RTBS is going in? I had one in my tank, along with some danios, platties, and cories. There were a lot of hiding places, but the shark still was very territorial all over the tank. Every chance he got, he chased the platties. I had to take him back to the LFS and get some neons instead. He wasnt big, maybe 2", but he was the biggest fish in the tank and felt he needed to show his dominace. For some reason, he picked the platties, I guess because they were the slowest fish in the tank. Like Digitial said, it could also just be the temperment of the shark. I heard they were docile when young, mine wasnt.

Good Luck B)

I can add 3 or so decent sized caves for the tank but i don't want to cover up to much roaming space as i want to have it quite planted too :) .

That sounds good. I hope it works out. I did not want to take mine back, but I had too :sad: They are beautiful fish, all with different personalities..

Good Luck
