Most certainly dropsy here.....(scales protruding...no gravid spot...fish swolen) I've personally never been succussful with a cure, but I remember some time ago, someone claimed to have found a cure for dropsy..... Hopefully they'll read your topic.

She is dieing. The scales sticking out mean she has an internal infection and they are notoriously hard to treat. The fish is also swimming on a funny angle and once they get to that stage there isn't much hope.

The easiest way to euthanase her is to put her in a small container of water and pop her in the freezer. Leave her there until the water is frozen, then bury or burn the body. If you have some Clove Oil, available form health food shops, you can add a few drops of that to the water and it will put her to sleep, (it won't kill her, just knock her out), and then you can freeze her.

I've found that it goes much quicker for the fish if you add a few ice cubes to a small amount of cold water and let that sit until they melt down a bit then drop the fish in.

I've often heard that it is contagious, but in my experience, no further incidents occur after I remove the isolated case......

As Ludwig has said, and if you do a 50% water change and gravel clean each day for a week, you can often dilute the disease organisms in the water and prevent the other fish from catching it. Clean water (regular water changes) and clean filters will prevent most problems.

If more fish come down with the same symptoms in the next few weeks then you might need to treat the tank with some sort of anti-bacterial medication. What you use will depend on what is available to you. Different countries have different legislation for drugs. In the UK there is a drug for internal bacterial infections in fish but I can't remember what it is called. I'm sure someone on here knows what it is, Maracyn or something similar to that perhaps???
