I'm going to get a 75 gallon tank and I've been thingin gon different things to put in it. My first Idea was a marine tank but then I figured who would take care of it when I went to collage, Then I thought I'd make it a cichlid tank. this is still and idea.
But now I'm thinking I'd make it another comunity tank and thought that maybe I would put some mollys in it sice I've alwas liked them. but my question is, are there any other peaceful fish that can do under the brakish conditions mollys like? and also, can a molly be acclimated to be able to not have salt in the water? or does there always need to be some? Thanks in advance for any help.

I had a similar dilemma, and I too have gone from marine tank, to cichlid tank to molly tank. I am very happy that I settled on a molly tank - much easier and still a lot to learn.

You can put almost any livebearer in a slightly brackish tank, suitable for mollies: guppies (my choice), swordtails, platties etc. However, be aware that mollies can be quite bossy and over-bearing (although not dangerous), and also breed like wildfire, so you ideally need something that can cope.

I have a school of male guppies and four mollies. Mollies come in a huge variety of shapes and colours, so they aren't boring to look at, and demonstrate a lot of interesting behaviour. Guppies are a bit less creative, but do come in a dizzying array of colours and shapes.

Other fish I've heard of that can tolerate or require brackish water include monos, scats and gobies. There may be others, but they all sound rather more difficult to care for and I feel they are "advanced" fish, or they're way too big for my tank. The other advantage is that livebearers are mostly dirt cheap!

Good luck with whatever you decide.

My mollies don't have salt in their tank at all (because of my snails), and they seem to live (and breed!) just fine. They live with tetras, a rosy barb, dwarf frogs, snails, pleco, catfish, etc... I have never had a problem with their being aggressive fish. I love mollies! Personally, I don't care for guppies. And Alien Anna has a good point, mollies come in many different colors so they're never boring to look at. And babies are always a joy!
