I had 5 mollys in a tank
2 red
2 black
1 white

I moved a black one and a red one to a seperate tank and now my red fish in the first tank quit swimming around and he is mostly hanging out at the top. Do the same color of mollies need to school together? if so then why is my black one from the first tank fine?

No. mollies do fine with other types of mollies but they do like there own kind. However, if it is a male and you removed a female it may be sulking a bit. Keep an eye on the fish, make sure it is still eating and swimming around fine. Mollies are active fish so if it is not active i would guess that something is not quite right. Good luck and keep us posted. :)

I am very new to molly's, got my first six yesterday. 3 Black (1 male 2 female)
3 white (1 male 2 female).

All Molly's came from the same tank in the fish shop but are completely different in the tank. The 3 white stick together and swim all over the place. The 3 black stayed at the surface for a while and have been hiding ever since, only occasionlly poking a head slightly out. Hiding or not through they are sticking together and having nothing to do with the white Molly's.

Don't know if this helps at all :dunno:

Good luck, hope you find the answer. I will follow this post with interest.
:fun:

Mollys are not shoaling fish. So if you look at their sex it might give you a clue why they were together.
