Yes they usually do fine together as long as there is a good mix of male/female ie. 2 females per male.

I'd like as many fish as possible but mom says the critters already outnumber us by more than 2 to 1

Some folks trade their fry to the pet store for credit toward food and things. If you don't rescue the batches from the tank far fewer will survive and you might not find yourself so overrun with fry.
Mollies, guppies, swords and platties usually get along great and add lots of interest to your tank
