Hi all,

I just got a few extra mollies the other day and added them to my tank. I was walking past and saw a flash of silver. I thought it must just have been a part of the new plant I had just bought detaching. On closer examination I have 4 mollie fry as they are my only live bearers in the tank. Its quite wierd just wasnt expecting it at all. I need to get some fry nets and food asap running round like a headless chicken trying to sort out. I have been feeding them powdered flakes for now and they are taking them.

Anyways its a bit crazy for a new starter!

Hey Andy, good stuff. The first time my mollies had babies I felt like I should be smoking cigars with my mates. You sure there's only 4 though? Think you may find more if you look carefully, unless they've been eaten by the adults. With my community tank, usually the first 24 hours the babies don't eat much apart from algae, and stay hidden because they can hear the parents getting asked "do you want fry's with that?" .
But after the 24 hour period they start coming out of hiding and will take powdered flake. I also use a mortar and pestle to grind good quality pellet food to a powder and they love that too. They grow so quick at first though. Mine usually double in size in the first few days.

Congrats, dad :)

when i first set up my second tank i had the usual community fish
.guppies
.neons
.mollies
.platies

any way the guppies and mollies had a constant batch of fry pooping out every other week, so i decided i wouldnt bother with a fry net or tank i would just let nature take its course and i can honestly say from wheneach batch were born and counted i havent had one eaten, i had onhe or two die but the other fish never touched them. and now my tank is overstocked with guppies and mollies.

i suppose if you got some bigger fish like gouramies or chiclids or something they might get eaten but if you dont i would say they should be fine.

I used to rear molly and guppy and i never use a fry net too, but i have a fry tnak for them. :)

i fed them with some powdered flakes... but the growing rate is slow here... not sure why. :)

But I enjoy the slow growng pace as I am using the fry in my planted tank to help me to clear the protein layer on the surface. :)

mines eat the powerd flakes to, they growin a lil bit, yet only had them for a few dayz now.. in my net. they have started to let there waste lol

i have always fed them on blood worm, i put them in a little dish o0f somesort(still frozen) get a stanley blade and hack the cube of bloodworm into tiny peices, i read it helps them grow that little bit faster.
