Would it work well if i got maybe 2 each of different species of Tetras rather than one school of the same species? Such as 2 Glowlight,2 Rummy Nose,etc... Would they school together or just stay with their own kind? I would get some with 5 or 6 Tiger Barbs. It's a 30 gallon tank.

You will get mixed responces on that. My answer in short is yes, take look at my 120L tank in my sig. I inherited most of that stock so it is a fair mixture at that. However the tetras seem to live as one large group.

In my experience - bad idea. I had 1 each of colombian tetra, black widow tetra, & neon tetra along with a krib, 2 guppies, angelfish & scissortail rasbora. Admittedly a very bad combo, but even with all those aggressive fish the 3 tetras all avoided each other as much as possible even when the krib was doing the psycho thing. Maybe this was because there were only 3 tetras, or maybe because they were very different sizes, but unless u know u'll be able to return them if it doesn't work out then I'd say just go with a group of the same tetras. Just my opinion.

i think it also depends on their sizes. when i had black neons, they wouldn't school with my neon tetras probably because they were much bigger but now my neons and rummie noses school together and they're similiar in size

i have 5 neons and 3 glowlights and they school very nicely. used to have 10 neon 6 glowlight and 2 rasborahs that schooled together, but lost the rest when the tank exploded.

Similaly sized, similaly shaped tetras that habitually cruise at the same depth, will probably school up, if they feel the need. Schooling/shoaling is a defence mechanism. In a small crowded tank, it has no real benefit and is not seen as often as with the same group of fish in a large relatively uninhabited tank.

Naturally schooling fish, will always feel safer schooling with their own kind.
