It depends on the specific gravity you wish to achieve and the salt mix. I mix one cup with each gallon of water and it brings me in about 1.025 where I want to be. SH
it depends entirely on the brand of salt, If I do 1 cup to a gallon of DI then I get a specific gravity of about 1.040, you should definitly have a conductivity meter, a hydrometer or best of all a refractometer.
It is dependent on brand, temperature and your individual water chemistry, also what SG you want the final mix to be ( I use a higher salinity to keep my inverts happy ) I never use a weighing method and the best way I have found is a refractometer, swing arm type SG meters can be made unreliable by many things
