Okay, so I orginally had plant substrate under a layer of sand, but over time (especially when I gravel vac the tank) a lot of the plant substrate came to the surface. Well, now there's quite a bit mixed in with the sand and I absolutely hate the way it looks. So, I was wondering if there was some way I could get the two seperated again. Next time I will be sure to put a layer of gravel between to hopefully prevent this happen again. Thanks!

If the plant substrate has a larger grain size than the sand (or the other way round) you could try sieving it through a pair of panty-hose/ stockings/tights or a piece of net curtain or something which has a reasonably tight weave, it would then hopefully hold the larger particles and allow the smaller particles through and separate it out for you. Might take a while and few sievings tho.

Or you could just toss the lot and start again!

Any time you put fine substrate over coarse substrate, it will filter through. The more coarse will always come to the top. Just the vibration of you walking by the tank will cause some to filter down. I did it with Eco-Complete and Tahiian Moon Sand. The sand has all gone to the bottom now. Other than taking everything out and filtering it through a sieve as mentioned, there really isn't any way to do it and even if you do, they will eventually switch places again.
