Probably on the bus to Brock U.
It all started when I realized I had no way to move some gold barbs, when I was moving a large tank. I decided, that though I knew they wouldnt die, I would, rather then kill them myself, put them in our pond, and let them live until the cold Canadian winter arrived.

Well, yesterday, I was playing around in the -40 C blizzard, and I broke the ice in our backyard pond. Immeditately, a few Koi swam to the top, curious. Then, to my disbelief, 5 of the 6 gold barbs swam to the top! One may have died, I dont know, but there were 5 there for sure! I COULDNT BELIEVE IT! You want a hardy fish? Look for some gold barbs!

Lovely hope they make it, be careful when you brake ice is sends shock waves and can kill the fish in the pond.

i've always wondered what do the pond fish eat when the pond freezes? and fdo you keep filtration running?

Our pond is loaded with algae and plants, they must just feed off of that. As for filtration, we never had used any type of filter, except a pump which did some mechanical filtering (along with providing up with a beautiful waterfall).

You don't feed fish in winter, as there digestive system shuts down they just eat things in the pond.

Fish don't need food in the winter; the cold water reduces their metabolisms to the point where they can survive off stored energy and a very small amount of oxygen. Instead of breaking ice use a pot of hot water to melt a hole in it.

I used to work with horses and in the winter to prevent the troffs from freezing we put a tennis ball in to float on the surface so it didnt freeze over. works very well.
