Minimum “tank size” for betta?

What would the minimum ”tank size” be for a betta? I don’t mean tank size like “how many gallons”, but like base dimensions. I am specifically curious about if the tank were one of those cool rimless cubes.

Not MINIMUM base dimensions, but ideal base dimensions, so the betta would be happy and able to thrive

id say probably shallow and wide, since they need to breathe. a cube might just work fine if it is small enough and not TOO small

I would say about 10 inches on a side? I think that comes out to about 4 gallons? Bigger is better, of course.

Betta tank sizes are always up for debate and I've kept bettas in many different sized tanks. I know you're seeking specific dimensions, but as a rule of thumb, avoid anything below 4G. I've seen 4G tanks with a long footprint which would be plenty for a betta. Bigger is always better, mainly for keeping water parameters balanced. Tall tanks are pointless as bettas need to frequently reach the surface to take air and many people keep domestics which often are bred to have fins as large as possible and the commute to the surface tires them out. This often leads to them biting their own fins to trim off the weight. One thing to bare in mind also is that younger bettas are alot more active than older bettas. The may not zip across the tank like a guppy, but do like to continually swim around their environment exploring. Older bettas, of course, still explore, but spend alot more time resting. I've kept older bettas in as little as a 5G, divided, giving them 2.5G each before with no problem.

Again, there is always a debate and these things are a matter of opinion most of the time. Probably haven't answered your specific question, but there might be useful information in there for you to form your own opinion moving forward

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts/opinions/experience! My sister “gifted” me her betta, and I don’t exactly have a tank for it as I am raising my Cory fry in my 10 gallon. He is in a 2 gallon bowl with a small heater keeping it at 74 degrees. My mom doesn’t want more tanks, but I am thinking since the cubes look so nice, she may let me. If not, I would consider a larger (like 5 gallons) bowl, because she is ok with bowls but not really tanks (I think she is afraid they will leak) I am going to my LFS today to see what sizes they have.

10g bowl maybe, i think it is harder to break
i had a 2.5 and it broke...
still be careful
pu tthem down on a cloth or you will get it cracked on stone
2 gallon is too small for full gron, glad youre getting a bigger tank

I think you want at least 12 inches long, preferably 18. Width can be less and isn't as important in my opinion.

Ahhh ok. I am looking into a 14 gallon cube at my local Petco, it is 15 inches long, 15 inches wide, 15 inches tall. (I think that is just about 38 centimeters?) I don’t think I would fill it full though, maybe 8 inches? And let some plants grow out of the surface of the water. It is $40 though, so I am going to see what my LFS has

Yeah, I think to to make a bowl so large it would have to be thicker, but I can’t find one online.

Yeah, I feel bad for him in there, for now though I think it should be ok, while I find a better home for a decent price. Luckily the bowl is pretty roomy, for a bowl. At the widest point it is 11 inches wide, so he doesn’t JUST have to go in circles. And I only Have fake plants that wont tear his fins, along with a big water sprite floating for him to red in the leaves
