Minimum light for a saltwater tank with maybe some low light corals. Mushrooms, polyps brain coral, and candy cane coral. Also are corals hard to take care of ?
I'm thinking of starting a 29 gal salt by converting my cichlid tank to one.
I have some experience because i work at my LFS. Well THX. :)

Hard corals are some of the toughest creatures to care for.

Soft corals are easier than hard corals, but they still require excellent conditions.

You'd need at least 3 watts per gallon, and about 12 hours is a good time length.

Are you sure you don't want to start off with a fish-only?

Might. I have some experience since I work at a fish store and we sell corals. If I get corals what ones are hardiest and lowest light. Someone said mushroom corals are.
THX

Yes. Mushroom corals are some of the most celebratedly hardy of the corals. They need stable, slow currents, and good water conditions. They are easy ones to start off with.

As for light, you will definitely need 3-5 watts per gallon. Mushroom corals and some soft corals can make do with 3 watts; nearly all others will need 4 or 5 watts. You CAN'T skimp on the lighting and expect the setup to work.

Good luck!

Correct. They are some of the most forgiving and easiest to satisfy of all the corals, both hard and soft.

Others may disagree with me, but this is only because there is always some variability within the species.

Working at a lfs may be helpful in finding great sources for love rocks and fish. If they have experienced and helpful folks that is a huge plus for you. Get some good books, pick their brains and get your hands wet with their tanks and stock... It would be a grand adventure to go salt. If I were you, however, I'd leave the 29 as it is and get something larger for your first salt - easier to get things right and not so delicate to keep balanced... Just a thought. Best of luck and let us know what you decide on.
