I have done a lot of reading up on the Melanotaenia boesemani Melanotaenia boesemani and have foun taht many put them in their african cichlid tanks. I have the right size for them (60 gallon that is a little long but same height as a 55). there are already about 12 cichlids and i have 1 syno and getting 2 more. i was planning on getting about 4 Melanotaenia boesemani. would this be a good idea. no disease in 2 years, and it is extremely overfiltered.

Depends what kind of African cichlids. My initial reaction would be definitely not. Most cichlids would be very aggressive with these fish.

Maybe try a post on the cichlid section.

What type of cichlids do you have?

From a water chemistry point of view, they are quite well suited to a rift tank. In the wild they are found in alkali water with a pH frequently higher then 8. The real question in my mind is the reaction of the cichlids and the stocking level. I know very little about cichlids - you might want to run this past the guys in the Old World Cichlid forum.
