The day before yesterday, the kids came running in from the garden to tell me there were two girls trying to "rescue" their rabbit from under a car. Turns out the rabbit had been out on and off all week and kept escaping. Went out to help along with another neighbour who caught her. The girls told me that their mum let it run the streets because she didn't like it. So anyhoo, we took her home thinking the kids were exaggerating. I asked the woman if she wanted the bunny back, and she said no

So bunny came home with us. They had thought she was a boy, but she is a girl. They said they'd bring her hutch up, but didn't until last night, and I can see why. She is a very very large bunny and th hutch was 3ft. She had eaten her way through parts ofthe interior walls to make room to lie down (and even then there wasn't enough room). The bottom level of the hutch didnt have a door on, so it doesn't take a brain surgeon to work out why she kept escaping.

We've made her a little enclosure which she is warm and safe in until we can find somewhere that makes 6ft x 2ft hutches (or until we convert a 2nd hand shed).

awww what crap parenting!

glad you got the bunny before a local stray dog did.
she looks reasonably healthy, let us know how she gets on!

I would have reported her to the RSPCA as well. They take action really fast and at least it would go on record that she negnected an animal - for what it's worth.

Well done for taking the bunny in :good: and giving it a home

What kind of morals are these parents teaching their kids?!? Ughhh, makes me so mad, I've always tried to ingrain it into my kids head that a pet is a responsibility, even when you are sick, tired, hungry, etc. This mom is leading by example and it's so sad that her kids will probably grow up with the same attitude, that pets are "disposable" when it becomes an inconvenience.
Rant over...
Lola is beautiful! Good on you for taking her in, I'm sure she'll appreciate going from Motel 6 to the Hilton!

Thats strange, i got my last rabbit exactly the same way. My neighbour threw him out, but it turned out to be a her, we found her under our car and took it back to him but my neighbour said he didnt want it, so we adopted her and named her chloe.

Its unbelievable how cruel some people are, we thought it was an icollated incident obviously its alot more common for people to do this than we thought.
Thank God you rescued the poor thing :/

Funny you should say that Gina - I've just replied to a message on another board where exactly the same thing has happened. It's a very common problem obviously :(

Rabbits love alfalfa, you could try feeding her some of that. Or even just a fresh vegetable (like a carrot  )

Thanks :) She has fresh veg every day, but we stick to green veg, because apparently carrots/apples etc are high calorie (she's a bit porky even though she needs to build her muscles up).

She also loves dandelions, and has just started eating her hay.

We're waiting to hear about a big wooden playhouse to convert for her - it'll be so cool if we get it!

Awww she is lovely! Glad she has a nice new home! We had a female rabbit that kept escaping when we lived in Wales she'd often go off the wild rabbits (tales from the parents not sure how true they are as they lied as to how my last rabbit died when I was 8 and I found out ten years later what happened! Anyhow glad she has a nice new home!

Funny you should say that, when I was little we kept chickens and every time one disappeared, my mum and dad told me they'd run off with the cockerel from up the road. My favourite disapeared and we spent years having friends report sightings, hunting for her etc. It was ony as a grownup that it clicked that evey time one wet missing, we had a roast chicken

Lola passed away this morning. She was fine when we got up, but was found dead later this morning :(

We've suspected for some time that she was a lot older than we were told, and it's most likely she suffered a stroke and passed away quickly. :-(

Ahhhhh RIP Lola :rip:

At least she had a good and happy end to her life and last few weeks with you :good:
