So my school of harlequin rasboras in my 29g has contracted some bacterial disease causing red sores all over their bodies. Good news is I already have Fin&Body meds to solve this.
My question is about my tank’s filter. I’ve got a HOB carbon filter, and the instructions say to remove the filter media and replace it with new media after the medication process is done. However, I am hesitant to do this because I just replaced the media a few weeks ago, when I did another round of medication after adding new fish to the tank (my parents won’t let me get a quarantine tank). Would it be okay if I simply turned off the filter instead of taking out the media?

Don’t turn the filter off. Just cut out the charcoal and remove it. Cut a slit in the bottom and shake it out. You can then put the media back in during treatment. Most of us don’t use charcoal anyway. Use your same filter media, minus the charcoal until it literally falls apart. No need to continually change it. I have some filter cartridges that over a year old, maybe 2. You can get a cheap, clear food safe plastic container to use as a QT tank. All you’ll need then is a cheap filter and heater.
