how long should i medicate a fish for?

i have a red-tail shark whose top fin was getting smaller. i've been treating him medicine aimed at defeating bacterial infections. so far his fin is getting bigger. he was being medicated for a week, but has been in his hospital tank for about 2 and a half weeks, in the same water (which is now clearing up a bit).

should i wait until his fin grows back fully? or put him back in the big tank with his friends? (i don't truly know when it will grow back fully. it seems to be growing slow.)

If all the infecton has gone should be ok to be put back in the tank.

i don't know if the infection is gone. he didn't appear to have an infection when i started medicating him. i just knew his fin probably had fin rot. there were no white edges, no nothing. what i've done has helped so far, but i don't know how far to help him.

What other fish does he share a tank with? Red Tails generally dont have friends and generally dont want them! If he's chasing other fish in the tank they might be nipping back. Are there any barbs or other nippy fish in there?

sorry i just said friends because they were his tankmates.

he doesn't chase any fish nor get chased. there's an african bichir in the big tank. i don't want to put medicine in there due to large amounts of plants.

i'll put him back in tihs weekend and hope the rest of it grows back. if not, out he goes again :)

thanks for the replies.
