I've just read that my Fluval 204 provide mechanical filtration through their spobge filters (makes sense) ....

Is that enough for my 8 gallon tanks (see signature) or do i need some sort of biological filtration as well / instead. :*)

Hi :) I am not familiar with the fluval 204 but with anyfish you need biological filteration as that is what breaks down the fish waist into harmless nitrate etc, I have 2 fluval internal sponge filters in 2 off my tanks and they both provide not only filteration but biological as well, so I would have thought yours would too have you read what it says on the box or leaflet, as it should explain if it does both.

Hi again I have just found this:

- Fluval 204 Multi Stage Filter Output: 180 U.S.g. (680 l)
- Recommended Maximum Aquarium: 40 U.S.g. (200 l)

Designed to provide optimum aquarium filtration. Versatile combination of mechanical and biological capacity.

so you are ok it does both. hope that helps :)

Just looked at the filter - it is a Fluval 2plus NOT a Fluval 204 cannister.

It's only got a sponge filter.

Bakc to the drawing board - is this good enough!?

yes it does the same thing I have 1 in my 6 gallon quarentine tank, again it should tell you on the box what size tank its ok for, I did think the 204 was a bit big for a 8 gallon :p Its an external filter and quite big.

Thanks Goldene,

It is a bit big for my tank, it was a free upgrade by my lfs ( :D ) - the box, hmmmmm i think the dump has it already :*)

Thaks for putting my mind to rest though. B)

I have just checked my box and mine is a 1+ which is big enough for yours, in what way is the 2+ too big is that in hight or bulk as long as the water covers the top a bit it should be fine.

Anything that tank water passes through or touches provides places for the beneficial bacteria to live. It lives on the glass, gravel, filter (the sponge AND all the surfaces it touches) on plants and decorations.

If water passes through the sponge, I don't think it could help but provide "biological filtration."
