We have a mbu who is 2 ft long and growing. He grew that big in 2 years and although he is in a tank which is 8ft x 2ft that is much too small. We are upgrading soon. This one holds 900 litres but the new one will hold 1500 litres and will be 8ft x2 and half ft x 3ft.
He is a beautiful creature but the tank he is in had to be reinforced with special straps and weighs over a tonne.
I wouldn`t advise buying them and selling them on, i think you need to know that people who buy a mbu are genuinely prepared for it. We have to clean out the left over food every day to stop pollution and he eats crabs, mussels, whelk, cockles, prawn, squid and octopus.
I hope my information has helped you and i hope you can consider whether a mbu is for you or not. They can live 30 years, they need a fully mature tank and can`t take the cycling of a tank like most fish can. Also, mine is in with a Perruno catfish who is also 2ft and they are fine together, there is however, always the risk of puffers turning on tankmates. Hamish needs a lot of time and stimulation from us and constantly looks to us to talk to him and play with him, as us fishkeepers do!!!
