OK! So as you regulars will know I have been on here loads lately asking questions about setting up a marine tank, well upgrading from my current Brackish tank into a FOWLR tank.. well today I know have Aragonite Sand and Seio Pump, meaning that my flow rate is now up to sctrach (Mr. Puff really doesn't like the 700US Gph though!!! Bless him  ) Well, anyway, the last thing I need to buy now is an RO Unit before I can start adding LR etc.. also I must change to Aragonite sand but that is not urgent. OK, so as of Monday I will be working 7 days a week for a whole month so will have no time to visit LFS to buy livestock or liverock once the RO Unit is installed. However, I am visiting my LFS tommorrow and was wondering if maybe I could get some livestock in the tank even though it is not currently RO Water? It is full Marine Salinty and like I say, it has full flow rate but doesn't yet have RO water or the aragonite sand (I want to put sand in when I change to RO Water)... so maybe tommorow I could get some livestock to keep me interested in the tank and get the tank more mature? At the moment it looks stupid having a little 3" Ceylon Puffer in a 30 Gallon tank!! So, is it possible for me to add a little livestock now? Also, what would you suggest?? Preferably something quite easy but that will allow me to add different varieties in the future..

Hope that makes sense!
Cheers :good:

Is the tank fully cycled? What filtration are you using? From what I know I would say no to livestock, but I could be wrong because your tank was brackish, I'm not sure. I would assume you'd need LR in there first, because otherwise you'll have the hassle of quarantining it before you add it to your tank, plus, have you thought about how much trouble it will be to change your substrate once you have livestock in there? Also, Is your puffer staying in that tank? I don't know many fish that can live happily with a puffer... :X

I'm a little worried about the rush, tbh, 'to keep your interest'? Setting up a marine tank needs patience... :/

Hopefully someone with more knowledge on what you are doing - the upgrade from brackish etc will comment for you, but for now, I'd just wait. :)

 Yeah sorry my first post makes it sound so rushed! Which it honestly is not! Yes, the tank is fully cycled and has a Fluval 3 Plus as filtration. The Ceylon Puffer is staying in the tank yes. Changing substrate shouldn't be that difficult because I just put fish in buckets of tank water? But worst case scenario I could do it before I go to LFS tommorrow. How come the LR would need to be quaratined if their is Live Stock in there?

I believe it is because all LR arrives with at least *some* die off caused through transit. If you stick the rock in the tank with dead live stuff, it could harm your fish. I think you're supposed to put LR in buckets of SW with a heater and powerhead for a while, to allow all of the die off to come away. If you're putting the LR in an empty tank, theres nothing to harm.... Hopefully (again) someone will confirm this!!! What are you putting with your puffer?

Well, i'm unsure what to put with Mr. Puff to be honest :/ He does make selection quite difficult though.
Livestock will be OK without RO Water though?
I think the best option is for me to go the my LFS tommorrow and browse. If something takes my fancy that I do not think will be there when I come back a month later then maybe I get it.. but your probably right. It's probably better to get the tank in the right place with the right sand and LR first.

I don't think tap water is recommended at all, but I think if you haven't got corals etc its not quite as important, saying that, if you are planning on buying a unit anyway, whynot get it first?

ARGH I wish someone a little less amateurish than me would come and let you know if I am correct. LOL. I am currently researching day and night to set up my own, making notes along the way, and I wouldn't tell you anything unless I had reason to remember it that way, but I'd be alot happier if someone could confirm :)

Tap Water wont affect you livestock - what it will do is feed nuisence algea & make it easier to take over the tank

As for your LR, try to have it out of water for as little time as possible, as any die off will cause a Mini-Cycle which will increase your Ammonia & NitrIte levels that is deadly to livestock

So glad you didn't include "ignore her, she's talking out of her.... etc etc" in your post. ;) LOL

There was nothing wrong with your advice or questions Sparkle :good:

Not quite sure what you mean :X Mr. Puff has always been kept alone! I didn't get any Marine fish from my LFS today because like sparklefuzz says it is probably better to wait until i'm 100% ready for other Marine fish first!
:look:

Was meaning before you started changing over to Marine - Wasnt sure if you had some tank mates with him

May be an idea to move your LR around when you 1st introduce the 1st lot of tank mates if he gets a bit territorial

I hope he is OK with any additions you make :good:
