I recently purchased a home with a roughly 2,000+ man made pond and waterfall.  There were only a few goldfish in the pond when I moved in and I have since added several Koi and a Fantail Comet.  The Fantail is maybe 8" +/- and my understanding it that is pretty big for that type fish.  All this has happened since the warm weather in my area arrived and the fish seem to have gotten along fine for several months.  I know the Koi will be fine in the winter, even when the pond freezes over (I have 2 pond heaters to keep a couple holes in any ice that forms), but someone recently told me the Fantail won't survive the winter like that.  Can anyone shed some light on how to treat that fish for the winter?   I would certainly hate to see it die because I don't know what I am doing.

Thanks in advance.

how deep is your pond as long as the temp caters to the fantails range then it should be fine.

Pond is about 2 ft deep for part of it and about 8" for part of it.  Temps in my area of the country are as follows (chart doesn't print too well though):

Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Annual
Avg. Temperature                                         30.8 34.5 45.3 54.8 64.0 72.2 75.8 74.7 68.2 56.7 46.0 35.9 54.9
Avg. Max Temperature                                  39.1 43.6 55.3 65.5 74.3 82.7 85.8 84.9 78.3 67.2 54.9 44.2 64.7
Avg. Min Temperature                                   22.4 25.3 35.3 44.2 53.5 61.5 65.7 64.4 58.0 46.0 37.0 27.6 45.1
Days with Max Temp of 90 F or Higher           0.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 < 0.5 3.0 8.0 6.0 2.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 19.0
Days with Min Temp Below Freezing             24.0 20.0 13.0 4.0 < 0.5 0.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 2.0 11.0 20.0 94.0

well youd want to maintain a temp of 20c to 30 c i dont see why it would be a problem in the winter.

When you say fantail comet... is it a fantail OR a comet?

Or more simply... does it have a long single tail (comet) in which case... 12" body length without tail is considered big. Or does it have a 'butterfly shaped' double tail? (hold your hands in front of you with your thumbs next to each other... does its tail form that shape?).
