Hi all

last night im pretty sure my oscars were mating, the female's tale was shaking, but not as if to swim, it was the same way ive seen mating malawi's do it, and then the male backed up to her, sort of back to back. do oscars lay eggs or are they livebearers? i have no idea? how long would eggs take to hatch? would i leave them in with the fish or take them out? i have a pair of oscars, a pair of gold severum and a plec in the tank.

Thanks in advance

Tom

Oscars are egg layers.

If they was in the tank on there own you could let the fry grow on a inch or 2 with the parents (or untill they lay again.)

im not sure how Oscars do there courtship? but with most Cichlids they will not want eny other fish arould there eggs, your other fish could be in for a hard time IF they are going to lay.

I have had loads of oscars and none have mated, all my Oscars did the tail vibrating.

i kept oscars for many years and found them to be a very inteligent fish with lots of body movement flaring of the gills and tail shudders even when not breeding just like two people passing in the street and stopping to have a chat.
over the years ive found that most oscar pairs in courtship can look to be very aggesive to each other with lip locking pushing or pulling each other around the tank tank decor being moved around spitting gravel and attacking external filter inlets.
all my oscar pairs liked to spawn on a large flat rock or a piece of slate with many hours of them cleaning the rock before spawning and everything near to the rock was removed by them including all the gravel and large lumps of bogwood weighing more than the fish.
if they do breed the severum will feel very unwelcome indeed and even large amoured plecos will get some grief.
the oscar is an awesome fish to keep good luck.

thanks for that, they have been doing everything said in the last post, i'll include a bit of slate on the bottom of the tank for them.
