What exactly does the D ring gasket on the top look like? Should it be a thick piece of foam rubber, or is it like some car gaskets and very very thin? I have this odd feeling that the one I bought tonight... well.... doesn't have one. right now I'm running it with nothing more than a piece of plastic bag cut, rolled up, and stuffed in to act as a gasket.... then sealed with lots of silicon. I REALLY need this thing running ASAP to clear up this dirty water from a new tank. Flourite and Onyx Sand just can't be rinsed enough to do any good, it would seem.... and cloud the water like crazy no matter how much you rinse.
