MarineLand 350 Magum

I use Fluval canister filters as my only filter. Yes, bacteria grows in the filter as long as you use a bio-medium. It should come included with the filter. :)

Well I don't think it was intended for that as the only filter medium it has is carbon and a water polisher insert. Anyway I solved teh problem by ordering the BIO wheel 60 pro. its unpowered and hooks to the Magum. HAs anyone else used this set up? is this a good filter? man I should have asked first :)

The biowheel allows bacteria to grow on it to help breakdown the ammonia & nitrites in the water. It is an added benifit with your current filter.

Well, here is my set up. I will have the Magnum 350 plus the BIO wheel 60 pro attached. I want to know if anyone has used this set up? It was very expensive but I have heard good things about the MarineLand products. I also have a pengiun power head for 55 gallon tanks that I can attach instead of attaching it too the magnum 350.

This is my problem. I can hook the bio wheel to the power head and there by keeping the flow out of the magnum at its peak, or I can hook the bio wheel to the magnum 350 and run the power head on the other end of the tank for increased surface agitation.

Then of course I can just leave the power head out all together!

Any thoughts or advice form the veteran fish keepers?

Well since no one seems to have an opinion I will add what I think to my own post.

I think I should hook the bio wheel to the canister that way teh powerhead will be free for surface agitation on the other side of the tank.

I think I will add a long tube to the the power head with a strainer at the bottom and stuff the tube with filter floss/filter foam. Since I am using sand this will keep it from jamming up.

Also I will add some carbon between the floss/foam for just a little extra filtration.

This is my plan I would really like some input.

One thing you can do with the Mag 350 is stuff fluval bio media into the carbon container.

I love my Mag, however I use it mostly with the micron filter and diatom powder after water changes. The diatom powder starts to clog up the already small pores on the micron filter so smaller and smaller particles get trapped. It really polishes the water, and it's fast too :D

I love my Mag, and wouldn't want a fish tank without one again.

The setup you mentioned is my setup as well. The Magnum 350 with the bio-wheels, power head for circulation, and protein skimmer.

I am using that setup on a Fish Only Marine 55 gallon. It has worked out very well. It has been very excellent and a breeze to maintain. I like the 350 as it is very easy to clean and change out filter media, etc. The Bio-wheels do take up considerable space but with a full hood are hidden well.

I do like the idea someone mentioned of placing bio media in the carbon chamber instead. Especially since the general belief of many is that carbon is not all that necessary. But to each their own.

This is becuase carbon can remove the additives, such as iodine, calcium, kalkwasser, etc.

Many reef aquarist, don't use mechanical filters. They put LS & LR in their sumps and use it as a refugium, with some shrimp, snails, etc. It's a more effective filtration, since your using what nature has done for millions of years. Plus there's no media to replace or change.

Maybe I'm being slow but... what is LS and LR?

It's cool.

But for those who don't...

LS - Live Sand
LR - Live Rock

They are not actually living rock or sand, but there are many creatures that live within the sand or rock, which feed on the detritus.
