This is a question to all members on the bigger side of the Pond, I will be viviting NY in 5 months and wonder if anyone knows of any good Fishy attractions I can take in whilst there

Cheers

oooh, where are you going?

I'm British but I've visited a fair few aquariums in the US on various trips!

If you are just staying in NY the NY Aquarium in Coney Island is a good visit, take the metro down to the Island and if the weather is nice then you can go on teh fun fair too!

If you are traveling further afield there are aquariums in Washington, Boston and Chicago that are brill, although the so-called National Aquarium in Washington is a bit of a wash out, they have a few good tanks!

The Boston Aquarium is worth the trip if you can make it, they have a MASSIVE tank that you can walk around and up and down, with all kinds of things in it. Quite impressive.

As you can see, I've only been to the ones in the touristy places, I am sure some residents can let you know of smaller ones that are off the beaten track.

We are staying about 4 - 5 building down from the Empire State Building, (So I think quite central)

Thanks for that

I've never been to the National Aquarium in Washington, but I do live in Boston. The Aquarium is terrific here, but if you are going to travel, you might as well see the National Aquarium in Baltimore, which beats the pants off of every aquarium I've ever seen.

Or you could travel up to Boston as you said and check out the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic Connecticut along the way. I've never been there myself, heard it's nice.

Hi..I've been to Mystic Aquarium...I can't say it blew my doors off. There is a smaller aquarium out on Long Island in Riverhead which I would only recommend if you were going out to see Long Island. Personally, I think Chicago's Aquarium was one of the nicest, the Shedd Aquarium. Boston is about a 4-4/12 hour drive from NYC Chac. It's a hike. But..Boston is a fantastic place and if you don't mind where we did the Boston Tea Party, go on up. LOLOL.

The Coney Island Aquarium has been around for years and if you haven't been there, I think that is the best local aquarium to go to when weighing location and time to get to and there should be a subway to get there. If you need any other recs, you can PM me. SH

PS..after the fish stuff....get the corned beef sandwich at the Carnegie Deli on seedless rye and SHMEAR IT with that great mustard. Wash it down with an ice cold cream soda and have a piece of that New York cheese cake for dessert.

PS...I agree....I forgot ..the aquarium at Inner Harbor in Baltimore IS a very good one. Has lots of restaurants and shops. If you plan it right you could maybe see a ballgame at Camden Yards. It's also about a 4-4 1/2 hour drive from NYC. SH

I forgot about the Inner Harbor area. Loads of attractive young people, fun shops, great restaurants, and a nice view of the ocean. I did think the Baltimore aquarium was superior to Boston's.

Not to slight my hometown though-- the New England Aquarium (in Boston, link here) is also located on the Boston Harbor. You could eat at Legal Seafoods across the street (if you eat seafood), catch a Red Sox game, take in a meeting of the Boston Aquarium Society if you time it right (link here). The aquarium is running a special exhibit on Jellyfish, which I've seen-- very cool. You could also take in a movie at the IMAX theater located at the Aquarium.

I do think as a tourist I'd rather spend time in New York-- as steelhealr suggests, much more exciting, more food, more stuff to do. Just IMO.

How was your trip? Where did you end up going?

I just joined this forum today, so I'm sorry that I couldn't be of more help (I live in New York).

Glad that you had a wonderful time in NYC... the city sure has changed a LOT (for the better) in the past 10 to 15 years or so... ever since Gulianni was Mayor he made some vast improvements especially as far as making the city safe.

I hope you come back again soon and can spend even more time the next time... to see everything there is to see in New York would take a lifetime.

Excellant city and completely changed my preconcevied notions of Americans & New Yorkers espcially

Chac,
You should plan your next trip to Northern California & visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Their 2million gal. tank is AWESOME!!! You can also walk around & visit local tide pools to see critters & Anemone in it's natural state.

And as for going to CA, I think I'll wait until the Terminator is out of office, but from what I've seen of CA you are a lucky bugger staying there

Chac..did you get the piled high corned beef sandwich at the Carnegie Deli with the cream soda and big sour pickle? the big salty pretzel from the corner deli???

Glad you enjoyed your trip over here. NYC is the Big Apple...lots to do. Now, you'll have to come back during the holiday season and see it all lit up.

Other places to see if you are avoiding Arnold's place:
1) Bar Harbor Maine and Acadia National Park
2) Miami/Key Biscayne/The Keys
3) The Grand Canyon
4) Monument Valley
5) Skyline Chili on Clifton and Ludlow in Cincinnati, OH. ....LOL...great cheese coneys. Follow it up with Graeters Ice Cream Turtle Sunday..can't be beat. lololol SH

I have 1 or 3 of the salted Pretzel, which very lovely, and there were a lot of the street vendors with these.

I also see that Rudy Giuliani was in London at the time of the attacks, he was on UK TV last night
