ok i have a friend that is wanting to setup a marine tank.

unfortunatley i dont have a clue how to help him.

he has a 15 gallon tank that he wants to start with and his main question is how much salt does he add to the water?

Any suggestions or advice will be relayed to him.

Ok It soesnt sound as though your friend knows much about salt at all. Converting to salt is a big step and requires plecty of planning. For a newbie 15 gallons will probably give him more trouble than its worth. Yuo should read the pinned threads and dicourage your friend form starting untill he knows exactly what hes doing.

Been there tried that but to no avail.

Im trying to get as much help for him as possible before some poor fish start to suffer or maybe even die. Hes determined to get a marine fish tank up and running and has very little knowledge on keeping fish.

Methinks we're headin' towards another april fools joke, arr. :grr:

(If it isn't your in a HEE-UGE problem -_- )

Nice try though. ;)

It's not an aprils fools lol im serious about this.

The last thing i want to see if he cant be talked out of it is to watch defensless fish go belly up.

Now i can set up a tropical tank easy enough and maintain it but, even i feel like he's biting off more than he can chew.

So to try and help him get the right setup and at least try to ensure that the fish have at least a fighting start is the best i can do to help him out.

Ok illustrate to your friend that he might have to spend over 500 pounds to get his tank working properly. I mean if your asking Q's like How much salt should he add then he shouldn't touch marine for a while. Don't destroy all his hopes but tell him that as soon as he can do it properly then he should but not untill. Get him strated on tropical first. How old is he? I haven't even started marine because of lack of money and time + all the knowledge. Tell Him to buy 'the complete book of the marine aquarium' By Vincent Hargreaves and then ask him what he thinks

Couldn't agree more - print off the pinned topics, show him just what he'd be getting into, do your very best to change his mind. If he knows little about fishkeeping then however much advice you give him, he's VERY unlikely to succeed with this. :(

Have you read the pinned article about good fish books at the top of this forum?

If not, read it, and tell your friend to buy one or more of these books. Don't advise it to him- order him to buy one. He will not go anywhere if he doesn't know a thing about fish.

To answer your initial question- The amount of salt needed varies slightly based on the type, but usually you need about 1/2 cup per gallon. BE SURE TO USE AQUARIUM SALT! A common myth is that you can use regular cooking salt if you need to. This is wrong. Make sure your friend knows this!

otherwise

depending on if it a fish only or a reef tank your salinity will be diffrent

reef 1.028 or 1.029

fish 1.022 1.023

he need to buy a tool that help measuer the slainity if you go to a pet stroe and ask they will know what your talking about :D

strat slow measure if not enough add a little more test agian.

well every tank is diffent my reef tanks do fine at that salinity, and also when i first started a long time ago it was suggested take it as you want :D
