Hey salties, having a little dabble on this side of the net yet again :hyper:

I was wondering, how corse is your average marine salt mixes, such as instant ocean? are some corser than others? If possible, obviously, i want to make life easier for myself by picking one that is easily disolvable, rather than having to either, sit and stir, or use a powerhead..

Also, when you guys are preparing your water, do you all use a heater?

i used instant ocean when i first started..i didnt use a powerhead, heater cos i was in a rush :D from what i remember it didnt take too much effort to mix it
i now use red sea coral pro, heres what i do
fill my 25l water carrier, heat overnight, add the salt thru a funnel, i dont use a PH i use a huge air stone ball thing.. leave it for a few hours.. then get one of the kids to roll the carrier around the floor for a while.. jobs a goodun
if you heat the water first then it mixes quite quickly.. cold water is a pain in the bum

ive confessed to a very bad way of doing it now.. seffies gonna give me a rollocking  we just wont tell her right ;)

I'd recommend instant ocean, very very good salt brand, grain is quite small and it always quickly and easily dissolves for me. A heater I guess would depend upon how warm your room temperature is. You don't want to pour cold water into your tank for several different reasons. I generally don't use a heater just because where I store the water is next to the fireplace, which is quite toasty.

I use h2ocen from d&d. takes it about 4 hours to dissolve using the head of an old fluval 3 plus filter.

d&d recommend leaving it 24 hours to mix and stabilize. iirc they said something about the ph.

i mix it friday night before going out and do my water change saturday morning so it gets mixed for about 14-15 hours.

Thanks for your help guys, :good: I will go for the bucket of instant ocean, and use that, adding the neccesary equipment if needed.

Before you choose a salt you must decide what is going to be kept in it - so for example if you are going to keep some lps like eyphyllias buy the salt with the highest calcium and mag content.

If its fish only, then buy the cheapest!

TMC is the quickest to dissolve ime as it is synthetic. It is advisable to leave it 24 hours and then test it before adding to the tank anyway. I like D&D salt too
