Marine Fish

When gradually acclimatised to the set up most fish out there will accept the levels we run our tanks at....some are very specific on water requirements and conditions, however the majority available in the trade will be fine. Slowly mix the water in the bag with tank water over a period of around 1 hour and you should be fine.

im just wondering can all marine fish live in the same ph/temp/salinty as each other?

Not exactly. There are some species sold, such as the catalina goby, that will have an early demise in our tropical tanks since they are coldwater fish. Likewise there are a few fish that really sensitive to sg.

Just make sure to read up on what you want before ordering/buying it and you'll be safe.

True KJ, there are SOME fish that are sensitive to temp/salinity, yet they are the exceptions rather than the rule. Always check before you add though :)

There are also cases where freshwater fish can be acclimitised over a long period to live in a salt water environment such as black mollies.

Also remember to check compatability of the species you want to keep, as some will attack other fish, some your inverts, some will start munching their way through your corals lol.

Go to bed with a nice reef tank and wake up to a FOWLR :p

My lfs has a catalina goby in the display tank I asked one of the staff and he said there are two similar species and all he can guess is that this is the tropical one as it's doing well.

Catalinas will survive in tropical tanks, however their lifespan is drastically reduced and their intense colours can be faded in our warmer water as well...best left for a specific cool water set up .

here ya go:

Lythrypnus dalli (Gilbert 1860), The Blue-Banded or Catalina Goby: This brilliant red and blue beauty is from off the two California's Pacific coasts. It is not tropical, and will only live a short while in water in the upper seventies, eighties. It should not be sold as a warm-water organism. Why do I, should I mention this? It is an embarrassing sham in the trade, and a waste of resources. This one at a L.A. wholesaler's.
